Restoring Mobility: How a Wheelchair Donation Changed a Life in Isokolo – Limbe

Meet Ms Fanny Doh. She is a vibrant young woman in her mid-thirties who faces life with great courage. Both of her legs are paralyzed, so she depends on calipers, crutches, and a wheelchair to move around. Sadly, these aids wear out over time, and replacing them has always been a heavy financial burden. Her family, her only support system, has done everything possible to help her, but it has not been easy.

To buy food or mobility aids? An Impossible Choice.

Fanny studied hard and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. She hoped to get a job and support her family.

Unfortunately, doors of employment did not open for her. Determined not to give up, she turned to small businesses. She started making snacks and later ran a mobile money kiosk.

Through these efforts, she tried to ease the financial strain on her loved ones and to cover her own needs but the high cost of mobility aids left her struggling.

Fanny was facing a an impossible choice. A choice that no one should have to face. A choice whether to buy mobility aids and go weeks or even months without food or buy food and not be able to move around.

A Good Friend Steps Up

A few months ago, one of Fanny’s friends reached out to St Charles Medical Foundation to share her daily struggles.

At that time, Fanny’s calipers were already damaged and unusable. Her wheelchair, the only tool she could rely on, was also in very poor condition.

The tyres were worn out, the footrest was broken, and the seat pad was light, torn, and very uncomfortable.

We realized that despite Fanny’s incredible determination, her daily hustle was becoming almost impossible. Something had to be done and it had to be done fast.
